Location: National Office, Philadelphia, PA

Summary of External Affairs Unit: External Affairs is responsible for developing, integrating and implementing public communications, direct response fundraising and marketing strategies, tactics and various media and communications vehicles for the AFSC. Its goal is to maximize the messaging clarity, impact and positioning of the organization as a peace and justice organization with a spiritual foundation, exemplary legacy and compelling relevance in today’s world.

Summary of Responsibilities: The Web Editor plans, writes, and edits engaging online content to support advocacy, education, fundraising, and constituency outreach for AFSC. Serves as the overall content editor for the website and major email newsletters; plans new content; trains staff on online writing best practices; and plans and implements AFSC’s online promotions strategy. This writer/editor joins a cooperative and award-winning six-person web team.

Responsibilities:

1. Write, solicit, and edit content from staff members and others to present AFSC’s perspectives and programs in concise, engaging, and accurate manner, consistent with AFSC’s values. Ensure that all AFSC web content promotes a consistent message and adheres to a high standard of quality and access.

2. Write and edit major AFSC email newsletters.

3. Plan and conduct organization-wide training for AFSC staff in online strategy and writing, including for web pages and email newsletters.

4. Supervise the web intern and freelance writers.

5. Identify online promotional opportunities manage online promotion campaigns for AFSC and major organizational projects. Build partnerships with non-AFSC web sites to promote AFSC’s efforts. Monitor AFSC’s presence in online communities such as blogs, Facebook, and MySpace, checking for accuracy and opportunities for outreach.

6. Assist the Director of Electronic Media in planning and implementing AFSC’s web strategy. Coordinate web content and strategies for assigned e-advocacy and e-fundraising campaigns.

7. With Director of Publications, integrate online and offline content to ensure the messages and tone are consistent and high quality. Contribute writing for Quaker Action magazine and select print publications.

8. Assist with preparation of annual web budget.

9. Represent the Service Committee online and at professional conferences and meetings. Represent the unit at staff gatherings as requested.

10. Perform other tasks as assigned by the Associate Director or Director of External Affairs.

Compensation: Salary Range #15 – Exempt - Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.

Qualifications

1. Five years experience in a position requiring original writing under pressure. Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise copy for online media; demonstrated ability to effectively edit and proofread the writing of others.

2. BA or equivalent experience required. Professional experience in online writing (e.g. developing educational web content, email newsletter, e-action alert, or online marketing copywriting) is required. Demonstrated proofreading skills desirable.

3. Experience developing strategy for effective use of electronic communications in a non-profit environment preferred.

4. Ability to sensitively and assertively manage and coordinate writers, program staff, photographers and other creative and technical staff to produce materials that meet the objectives of the organization.

5. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple simultaneous projects within deadlines and budgets.

6. Demonstrated ability to get along with a wide variety of people; ease in initiating contact with people in person and by phone. Sensitivity to the diverse constituencies of AFSC.

7. Experience that demonstrates ability to work independently and imaginatively and to exercise judgment consistent with AFSC goals.

8. Availability to attend evening and weekend meetings and to travel, as required.

9. Demonstrated ability to organize time well; to work under pressure to meet numerous deadlines; to give attention to detail and to provide careful follow-through on responsibilities.

10. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with committees and staff and in an organization which is characterized by a high level of consultation and in which consensus is the formal process for reaching decisions.

11. Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including nonviolence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.

12. Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.
