Policy Analyst/Organizer – Healthcare for All

The Institute for America’s Future (IAF) is a respected national organization that combines research and advocacy to empower people to achieve economic progress and social justice. IAF and its sister organization, Campaign for America’s Future (CAF), is one of the leaders a new Health Care for America NOW! coalition along with dozens of other national and state-based organizations. IAF will be leading the policy and research component of the campaign and this Health Policy Analyst will help produce research and policy products for the coalition and will also organize health care experts and opinion leaders to advocate for quality, affordable health care for all.

POSITON SUMMARY
Come help lead the fight for health care for all! The Campaign for America’s Future (CAF) and the Institute for America’s Future (IAF) seek a policy analyst/organizer to work on a national health care reform campaign. The core of the health policy Analyst’s work will be authoring a steady stream of national and related customized state reports that command attention in the media, in Congress, among opinion leaders and in the field. The analyst will also work with the policy director to keep track of and digest existing research and develop ideas for a comprehensive, detailed health care plan. This position will report to CAF Health Care Policy Director and will work closely with our online communications and press teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Evaluate the failings of our current health care system and promote national reforms to guarantee people affordable health care, including the choice between regulated private insurance and public insurance.
• Critique proposals that keep people at the mercy of the health insurers to fend for themselves in the health insurance marketplace.
• Author papers and other materials, coordinate with a team of policy advisors, and collaborate with other research and advocacy institutes conducting related work.
• Develop legislative options for audiences of policymakers, the press, and the public.
• Represent the organization on health care issues through public speaking and media communications opportunities.
• Organize and support leading progressive policy intellectuals to get into the public debate
• Create and send weekly updates to activists on healthcare issues
• Work with our online communications team to define CAF’s strategic online plans/campaigns and seize strategic opportunities
• Work with our press team to create reports, events, press releases, and other actions to get earned media focusing on the need for universal health care
• Maintain confidentiality of privileged information.
• Other duties as assigned consistent with the organization’s mission and goals.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university in public policy or a related field
• Four or more years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Working experience with coalitions on issue-based campaigns
• Legislative/Congressional experience
• Experience working on healthcare issues
• Strong background in health policy, including economics
• Familiarity with health reform issues such as individual and employer mandates, pooling of risk, guaranteed issue, and ERISA.
• Strong interest in working with policymakers, advocates and other constituencies to develop policy options and strategies to achieve change
• Significant experience working with health care data and analysis
• Experience working for a non-profit advocacy organization and knowledge of progressive and conservative politics, organizations and policymakers

COMPENSATION / BENEFITS
Salary up to $50K but higher for a very experienced person. Benefits include vacation, health insurance, healthcare/childcare flexible spending account, public transportation assistance and retirement plan.
